The Academic Fieldwork Coordinator holds a faculty (academic or clinical) appointment and has administrative, academic, service, and scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission and philosophy of the academic program. This individual demonstrates competence in fieldwork education, teaching and curriculum development. In addition, the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to plan, coordinate, facilitate, administer and monitor activities on behalf of the academic program and in coordination with the academic and fieldwork faculty.

This position involves limited teaching in the classroom and mostly supervising students while on fieldwork. However, in the event of an unforeseen circumstance that requires the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator to provide short term teaching support for a class, teaching time may not exceed 20 hours in a working week and may not extend beyond two consecutive weeks.


  • Developing, monitoring, and refining the fieldwork education component of the curriculum.
  • Facilitating quality learning experiences for students during fieldwork education.
  • Evaluating student’s performance, in cooperation with other faculty, to determine their ability to integrate didactic and fieldwork learning experiences and to progress within the curriculum.
  • Educating students, fieldwork and academic faculty about fieldwork education.
  • Selecting fieldwork learning environments that demonstrate characteristics of sound patient/client management, ethical and professional behavior and currency with occupational therapy practice.
  • Maximizing available resources for the fieldwork education program.
  • Providing documented records and assessment of the fieldwork education components (includes fieldwork education sites, fieldwork educators, etc.)
  • Actively engaging core faculty fieldwork education planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Responsible for the Section C.1.0 of the ACOTE 2011 Accreditation Standards for an Associate Degree Level Educational Program for the Occupational Therapy Assistant.
  • Position responsibilities: a. Communicates between the Academic Institution and Affiliated fieldwork education sites.
  • Fieldwork education program planning, implementation and assessment.
  • Fieldwork site development.
  • Fieldwork faculty development.
  • Temporary teaching responsibilities as assigned.


  • Occupational Therapist with a professional degree or OTA with a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Licenses/registered/certified or eligible for licensure/registration/certification in the state where employed.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience as an occupational therapy assistant or occupational therapist.
  • 1 year experience in fieldwork teaching and/or fieldwork coordination preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization. Interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills.
  • Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology (word processing, e-mail, database) or proven ability to learn these skills.
  • Able to work with students with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal and practice issues affecting fieldwork education students and the profession of occupational therapy.
  • Able to meet the faculty requirements as stated in the Evaluation Criteria for the Accreditation of Occupational Therapy Assistant Programs.
  • Member of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
  • Able to initiate, administer, assess, and document fieldwork education programs.
  • Able to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers.
  • Able to travel, as needed.
